Today we had our Traditional Halloween Celebration in school. All the children came super excited in the morning dressed up in their Halloween Costumes! We had our circle time with witches, ghosts, bats and other scary creatures. Afterwards we enjoyed playing Trick or Treat Fishing Game where all the Liles had to fish for some banana chips, raisins and clementines. We also visited our friends from Sunflowers and Tulips and were happy to get some more goodies. We visited Adriana’s office as well who was waiting for us with a surprise spider rings. As part of our entry point to our new IPC Theme “Sand and Water” we introduced 4 different sensory activities for the children to explore freely.
BUG SLIME: The children got to explore a sticky, slimy mixture of sand, food colouring, water and shaving foam. They were able to add different animals to the mix and explore how it felt and changed when we added more water. The children really enjoyed this very sticky and gooey mess!
Shaving foam mud sand. This activity was thicker in texture allowing the children to build structures and shapes using the very solid and thick sand.
BUBBLES AND WATER STATION: This activity allowed the children to explore water and bubbles. They measured and poured water, splashed to create bubbles. They were also able to experiment with things that floated and why they floated or why they did not. They also spent time blowing coloured bubbles of their own using straws, soapy coloured water.
SEASIDE SENSORY ART: After talking about the beach and asking who has been before, we will discuss how some beaches have soft sand and that the water appears blue and green. Children were then presented with paint, printed shells, crumpled paper, and sand to create a beach painting.
As an entry point these activities were a fantastic way to introduce the theme of water and sand to the children. With little or no direction from the adults they moved from one station to another, some even mixing and experimenting. We will reintroduce the stations in the coming weeks as individual activities for more focused exploration.
